Informed nutrition consumers
One of our roles as educators is to help our students become informed consumers. This includes becoming informed food consumers. Helping our students learn to interpret the nutrition information on food packaging is a skill that will allow students to make healthy food choices when presented with a variety of options both in school and outside of school. Lesson planning about nutrition can be structured to involve activities in the classroom that relate directly to the foods that are eaten in individual student's homes. I really liked the comment in today's class that suggested that the topic of individual food choices could be used as both a way to discuss nutrition, and also as a way of bringing culture into the classroom.
