The facts of life
It's funny how sometimes it is difficult to explain things that are a very natural part of being human, like what happens to the bodies of boys and girls during puberty. Today we talked about the importance of using comfortable but accurate vocabulary when describing health topics to children. There is a certain social taboo associated with the discussion of the human body and all of it's parts and functions. If we are to educate children on the workings of their own bodies in an effort to teach them how to keep themselves healthy and safe we must help eliminate the mysteries and replace them with facts presented with no embarrassment or shame. Teaching health to students should be a very matter of fact subject that should be presented in a matter of fact way.
